Well, a study done at my university last year found that 10 minutes worked extremely effectively (much more so than an hour).

It does vary depending on the individual and other factors such as exhaustion because the more exhausted someone is, the faster they are likely to go into deeper sleep. What you need to do to find out what is the shortest amount of time for yourself is to go to a sleep lab and get them to test how long it takes for you to get your first sleep spindle (its on an EEG - a specific spike in your brain waves).

The theory goes (although it's not really firm yet, this is new stuff) that the bodies need for sleep has two factors - the homeostatic need for sleep caused by time passing and the physiological need for sleep. When you have a brief nap, once you get to a certain sleep stage, it looks like the bodies homeostatic need for sleep is satisfied for a while.
If you have a big sleep debt from a few sleepless nights, you'll still feel tired/sleepy pretty quickly but even then, a brief nap should help.

Try for between 10 and 15 minutes :)

2 minutes doesn't get you into a deep sleep. deep sleep is when you've gone into the REM cycle, . Either way, 2 minutes does nothing. 15 minute power nap.
