The bird you have pictured is an Ivory billed Woodpecker and has been extinct since the late 1940's. There were some recent sightings by a couple of bird ethusiasts but when they returned to the Arkansas Swamplands they could not find the bird. It is Very likely that they viewed a very similar bird, a cousin to the ivory billed woodpecker called the Pileated Woodpecker. The Pileated Woodpecker has virtually an identical color pattern to the Ivory bill with its White laced wings and red crown. Hopefully I have answered this question for you, but i sincerely hope that i am wrong and that the Ivory Billed Woodpecker has somehow survived.

Are you asking because the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker was generally considered extinct until very recently?

I've been a birdwatcher all my life, and have been aware of the IBW's status as extinct since I was a child when I took my first interest in birdwatching.

I've never seen this bird. It's a very distinctive-looking bird, and would immediately gain the attention of anybody familiar with birdwatching or ornithology.
