My neighbor has about 15 pigeons in about a 4'x2'x2' cage outside his garage. He takes it inside the house sometimes. I never see him look at them or anything, and a mexican friend of mine suggested that he eats them. Does anyone know why this guy would have so many pigeons?

Don't you know? Carrier pidgeons are Mexican emails since they can't afford computers.

Pigeons can be food like chickens are food. Perhaps he eats them, or eats their eggs. Maybe he likes to hear them "sing". One of the best pets I've ever had was a pigeon. Maybe he composts their droppings to use on his garden. Maybe he's going to set them free as part of a celebration. Don't ask him yet; wait till after you've chosen the best answer and see if your neighbor's answer agrees.

Depending on the type of pigeon, they are sometimes used for competitive sport purposes. If you have the right breed and size you can make a small fortune raising them and then shipping them out to foreign countries that do not have animal rights laws.

They're probably homing pigeons. In fact, I was wondering if your neighbor is on my bowling team. This guy on my bowloing team is Mexican and he keeps pigeons because he enters them in contests. They are homing pigeons and I think they are timed on how long it takes them to come back or something.

Probably for the same reason that Marlon Brando kept pigeons in a cage in "On The Waterfront": just because.

Why does he keep pigeons in the cage?

Because the cage is too small to hold a cow, silly!

They are called carrier pigeons. It is an exercise in training these noble birds to carry a message, great distances and return.

They are not a food item, they are a sport of sorts.

For some they are pets. With training they can be set free and they'll return to their home. Sounds like a breeding ground for the Bird Flu to me...but some people enjoy it. Could be eating them too...but chicken is cheaper to buy that raising pidgeons as they have only a little meat.

Why don't you ask him? Don't confront, just ask him if he needs more cages or something so they won't be crowded and if he's eating them, he'll probably tell you he keeps them thinned out. They sell pigeon at the grocery store, it's called squab, so it's not so gross to eat them.

They could be pets or they could be eating them. Pigeon is actually not bad...no worse than chickens. They are a bit of a delicacy in some places like pheasant or grouse.
