What OS? Windows XP? I have done it with XP before (many times). Insert the original install CD and be very-very careful to read the prompts before selecting anything! You do not want to select "recover mode". You want to reinstall on top of the current installation. If you're not careful you can lose everything. If you do it right you end up saving all files, programs and settings and have a clean install. You will need to apply service packs and patches again.
If you have a Dell or other big name PC you may want to call them or check on their website for instructions. Many times they come with a CD to reinstall everything, but sometimes this erases everything first so be careful.

Assuming Windows XP
Insert your CD disc into the Drive. Reboot your computer, as the computer begins to post, watch closely (at the bottom of the screen) for the prompt "press any key to boot from CD", press any key (i.e. space bar) Windows will go through various hardware checks, and loading files. When you get to the screen Windows XP Setup - you will have the choice of:
ENTER=continue
R=repair
F3=Quit
hit enter
next "Windows XP Licensing Agreement" screen appears hit F8
Now it will search for previous installations-Once yours is found you will have the choice of:
F3=Quit
R=repair
ESC=Don't Repair
You can do a repair installation, or Install a fresh copy of XP.
follow the screen prompts from here
****NOTE******
Your computers Bios needs to be set to boot from CD first.

Back up your data first...
I reformat the drive and reinstall from scratch. I think it is better that way.
