Make time to meet with your teachers before or after school. By showing an active interest in mastering the knoweldge that they are providing, they will be more leinient when it comes to your grading plus you will be able to get better insight as to what will be on the test. Use this time to gain understanding of what you missed in class or at least verify with the teacher that you have the correct understanding.

At this stage in your academic life, you have a lot of catching up to do. All the answers so far are good, but there's one thing that many ignore and I think it's the most important: Self-discipline! It has been documented that no matter how high the IQ, no matter how fine a school or magnificent the teachers, if a student does not have self-discipline he or she will not excel. Self-discipline makes one go the extra mile, do the extra work, study when it would be more fun to hang out with the guys or gals. Self-discipline can help someone throughout their entire lives. It will keep marriage going strong, keep a job even on "Blue Mondays", pay your bills, teach your children, save your life. Give it a try, it might be the most important thing you learn in your life. I know it is in mine.

Start by applying everything that you've learned from every class in everything that you do. If your in History class and is asked to give a report on WWI for example make sure you apply what was learned in English to ensure that your grammar is correct for starters. Use the tools that you were given in what ever you do.

1) Don't study. Fail very badly in a exam. See how it feels. Then you will REALLY feel like studying.
2) Start reading textbooks with interest ...
3) Stop surfing all the time like me and get studying :P

i tell you what! dont learn the lesson all the time, only at the tests, or when you knou that the teacher might ask you. or, when you learn the lesson, ask the teacher to ask you and to give you a mark.
it works for me!im the best student from my school(honestly), here we have marks from 1 to 10, and i have ONLY marks of 10!
