HOW CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MALE TURTLE AND A FEMALE TURTLE WITHOUT GOING TO THE VET ?

You cannot sex a hatchling turtle, unless you run a DNA test. So going to a vet won't help you either. As the turtles matures around 4-5" in most species, you can tell the gender of the turtle by the tail. The tail is where the penis is located and thus the males have a thicker tail. This is the only accurate way to determine gender. In some water turtles like sliders, cooter or maps, the males will have longer foreclaws and females tend to be bigger in over all size. In box turtles and tortoises, the males' plastron (bottom shell) will be slightly concave.

But the best and only certain way to sex a turtle or tortoise is by comparing the tail when it is semi-mature (usually around 4-5"). If you are lucky, the boys will fan you and show you his goods.

I think you should look at the bottom of his tail;there should be something like a hole if it's a female.I don't know about males.

put them together in the same cage,and if they start humping each other,then there different sexes
