I'm not going to say for 100%, but I've always thought that it was the "part" of the trial - in other words, there's the arrest, the arraignment, the pre-trial hearing along with all the motions that go into a case. So by the time it gets to a courtoom scene, there have been, for instance, 62 things in the sequence of a trial prior to that moment.
That's my best guess, anyway!

It is just to let the public eye know what part of the trial they are on. They most definitely can't show every single stage of the court trial, can you imagine how long the show would be. I really like this show and at first I used to ask that same question.

That we don't have to watch the boring parts of a trial. Have you ever seen a trial? It is terribly dull.
