if it's a betta or any other air breather - no...

for other fish, yes, get an air pump/filter...it needs oxygenation and clean water - a 1 gallon bowl will get dirty VERY quickly...

if you have a small filter, you can probably get away with doing water changes once a week...

better: get that poor animal at least a 10-gallon tank - they don't cost but $10, and your friend will be so much happier...

actually frequent water changes will harm the fish and its ''skin''..it does need a small pump not only for AIR but to filter waste out of the water itself.only a beta can live without an air pump.each time you change the water which should be several times a day for air supply you also need to treat the water. just buy a pump!!

It shoud be ok. I had a beta in a smaller tank than that and as long as you change the water once a week it should be fine. Make sure you use water condtioning drops to get rid of any chlorine or chemicals in tap water. You could also try using bottled water, just make sure it says spring water and not just purified or filtered tap water.
Another option is getting a tank with a filter. Petco sells a one gallon tank for $25 that has a pump and a light on top. I have one and its great for my beta.

Get an air pump that isn't very powerfull, , this will keep the water full of oxygen for your fish to breath, or just get a nice, real plant(s), buy 1 more for every 5 more gallons. (Plants will also filter the water)

Add a small plant. Banana plants are cheap and easy. Also try Java moss, Java fern, or even a small potted plant. Those add lots of oxygen, and you won't have to do as much maintenance.

too frequent changes will kill the fish. buy a small pump and it lasts much longer and fish will live much longer.
