You know, I loved the opening chapters. I read them over and over again - the shooting on the beach, the village packing up to leave, Karina jumping off the ship...

And then I'd skip to the last chapter and the epilogue.

I never really liked the middle of the story - I guess because I missed the human interactions. I always was intrigued by the brief mention about Karina's later life in the afterward. Why didn't anyone speak her language at the mission? Where had all her people gone to?

But I guess I just wasn't in to reading a survival story about one girl all alone for years and years.

I have always loved this book. Scott O'dell is a great storyteller. And though I like his other works, none of them can touch Island of the Blue Dolphins. I just love the way Karana seemed to focus on what needed to be done and did it. From the making of her hut to capturing the wolves. Awesome, awesome story.

I loved this book as a child. I always thought it was very beautiful and very sad. I felt so sorry for the main character, who had to spend so long by herself. But I also felt bad for her when she had to leave the island - she didn't belong there and she didn't belong away from there.
