A cruise can be a fantastic vacation! And, you don't even need to make it a Disney cruise for the whole family to enjoy! I've been on 4 cruises myself, and one of them with my 5 year old daughter. Most of the larger ships have daycare like facilities and activities for the younger kids. Teens can find plenty of games and activities also. For a first time cruiser, I would probably recommend a Carnival ship sailing somewhere in the caribbean. All your meals are included, but the drinks are not. Most of the entertainment on the ship is also included. On a typical 7 day cruise, you would likely have 1 or 2 formal nights (plan for appropriate attire). I also recommend buying a couple underwater disposable cameras. These are also available on the ship, though they are expensive there. You'll want these for swimming with the stingrays - and excellent adventure often done in Grand Cayman, or for snorkeling, which is popular at many of the caribbean ports of call.
Shore excursions can cost if you do any of the guided tours, and some of them are well worth seeing. Either way, there will be shopping at every destination.
Dollar for dollar, I'm not sure you can find a better value. Where else can you go, unpack for a week, not have to rent a car, stay in the same room, and see so many different places?
Oh yea - one more thing - TAKE ME WITH NEXT TIME!

I went on a family oriented Carnival cruise last December. The food was pretty good and too much of it. The kids were extremely annoying, they ran all over the ship and played some kind of games with the elevators when they got bored. They also took over the pools and hot tubs. I got really tired of the kids. I didn't get to spend enough time in the cities I went to. Only a few hours. I didn't get the amount of hours I was promised. The rooms are ok but small. Smaller than any average hotel room.
All things considered, I wish I had just flown to the place I wanted to go and got a hotel room and rented a car. I advise Not to go through Galvestine at all. I was there in December and it is still being rebuilt. If you can find a cruise without a bunch of American schoolkids running it, it mihjt be fun.
The first cruise I went on was a few years ago to Alaska in late summer. Mostley older people I was 40 at the time and I enjoyed that one more. One thing I would advice is to try to book your offshore excursions on your own and not use the ship except for ideas. The ships rates are riduculously overpriced. Do take the time to find some maps of the places you are going to and think about renting your own car. Have fun if you go but try to talk to a lot of people about their experiences first. Also, Carnival charges About seven dollars U.S. for drinks and you can't bring anything on board or they confiscate it till after the trip. Norwegian was not like this. Carnival is affordable and fun for kids but you have to pay for a soda pass if anyone wants a soda. Twenty five bucks for that. I am mentioning all this just as an example of the hidden charges. There were many more, the photos the ship takes are nice but on the pricey side also. Someone else did pay for the cruise but I had to pay the travel expenses to get to the port and all the extras. I could have flown to Mexico cheaper. I did enjoy the cruise to Alska tho.

I have only been on one ship, the Splendour of the Seas RCI. We had an incredible time. By "family" do you mean your own kids or your siblings? I can see older kids on a cruise. I just don't understand taking young kids then parking them in the so called kid's activities while the parents are off doing something else. I guess I see family vacations as something to do together. Older kids hold up better. Shore excursions on our trip kept us busy for most of each of the port days. Moneywise it can become expensive with the extra costs for tips, drinks, side trips, extra on board activities, souvenirs, etc.
Cruises are lots of fun. We have our next one booked for July. Boston to Bermuda. Looking like a bargain, so far, we shall see.
One cruise and we think we're hooked. Check out all the cruise sites and choose the one that suits your family.

I have never personally been on a cruise, but have had several friends who have. They swear by it. From what I understand, it is the most incredibly amazing experience that you can have and there is nothing else like it. There are so many different cruise lines out there that cater to just about anything that you are looking for. I hope you have a great time and happy sailing!

Cruises are lots of fun. There are lots of age appropriate activities for every member of the family. Just make sure you don't fall overboard! That could put a real damper on the trip.

No they really arent. I suggest an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica. They include everything. Food, drinks, alcohol and resort sports. Cruises are dangerous these days I think.
