Dont punish your child by suddenly taking it away. Think about how you would feel if someone suddenly did something similar to you. That pacifier is something that means A LOT to your child and the situation should be treated with the utmost respect.
Gradually take the pacifier away as you would when you are weaning a baby from a bottle. Little by little. I cant give you specifics because it really depends on when your child is using the pacifier. Children who continue to need a pacifier, especially as a toddler or older child, often have some insecure feelings and use the pacifier to comfort themselves. So, offer extra love and affection and attention during this time.
If you can offer extra details or you need more specific information, please email me. I'll be happy to help.

It's okay if your baby still sucks a pacifier at 9mths. I took my baby off the bottle and pacifier at the same time (10mths) I thought it was easier this way. My niece sucked a pacifier until she was three and it was horrible trying to take it away from her! I say 18 months should suffice.

That is totally normal. If your child is still sucking on a pacifier when he/she is 4 or 5, that is the time to worry. At 9 months - it is soothing him/her from stresses in life - it would be cruel to take it away.

the best way i found of taking my kids' pacifiers and bottles away was to just hide them completely and force them to find another way of calming themselves. if she is still using it constantly, not just to settle down for nap or the such, it will be harder, but after a few days of tantrums, she will not even remember it. i've found the cold turkey method was the best with all of my kids. there is always a few days, sometimes a week, of adjustment when we have a few more tantrums and a little more crying at bedtime, but it always has worked.
and for the few studies that are starting to pop up and say that it reduces the risk of sids or whatnot, there are hundreds more that have been out for years that show the higher incidence of tooth deformation, decay and ear infections from the constant use of pacifiers.

Oh, good of you to think about this. I've seen kids sucking pacifier at age 2 and 3 and even more . I cannot be at much help, sorry, but think you should try to take it away for the best of the kid. may be you can do it gradually.
Good luck!

That's still ok at 9 months. My son is 7 mo and I plan to TRY to wean him off of it at about 1 1/2. I'm dreading the day. Everyone I talked too says cold turkey is the best. You'll have a few nights of screaming hell, but then it is over. I wouldn't worry about it quite yet. The Docs say it helps prevent SIDS.

My baby is 9 months old too & we haven't even thought of taking away his pacifier! My brother had them until he was 3 years old, but I think we will take it away before then!
I plan on taking it away for the days & just letting him have it at night, and then slowly getting it out of his night times as well.
Good luck!

Actually doctors report that sucking on a pacifier until age 1 greatly reduces the risk of SIDS. If you want to start weaning her off of it slowly then do so. Perhaps only give it to her at naps and bedtime. I wish you the very best!

Children suck on a pacifier as a way of soothing themselves as a substitute for suckling at their mother's breast. If you child still wants the pacifier, try taking it away from her and holding her more. As she starts to feel more secure about your presence, she will naturally want to start moving away from you toward autonomy and need less holding.

My kids had a pacifier until age 2 and it was just fine. If it helps calm your baby then I think its fine to have. I did things my way when my babies were little. They layed on their stomachs and didnt die of SIDS, they had pacifiers and bottles until age 2 and a half, they all grew up and are healthy. Don't deprive your child of something if you think it has some benefits.
