I can think of only one reason any child should have a cell phone, and that is for emergencies. There are very few payphones any more, so if the child misses the bus or has to stay after school I can see using a cell phone to call home and let the parents know what is happening.

I can't think of a single good reason for kids to have cell phones in school. They don't need them for emergencies. That's what the teachers are for. If something happens, the teachers will call home. Cell phones are just a nuisance at school (and work).

Students should be allowed to carry a cellular phone with them during school hours. To prevent disruption of class the phones should always be off. They should not use the phone unless they are on break or it is an emergency. Not a "Oh my goodness, my hair is a mess" emergency, but a true emergency. We have school violence and natural disasters, things that happen not on the average day, but a parent or guardian does feel more at ease believing that if they can find their child or reassure them. So I say allow cell phones, but be responsible. Don't disrupt the class.

With the crazy world we live in cell phone's provide students with a sense of security. In an emergency they can call for help. Likewise, parents can call their children and advise a change in plans so the child won't be upset if the parent is late or not home. If students see a fight they can call for help to stop it. Our school has only 1 pay phone can you imagine the line before cell phones?!

In school??? NONE. There are already so many distractions that it is a wonder that anyone still has a chance to learn the alphabet.
From what I have heard, it is a common pratice to text answers of exams/tests to each other while in class. What happens when you're out on your own in University or your big job without your little support network?
Outside of school, it is a great idea. Especially if they need to walk to and from school. Or have to take public transit on their own.
I guess if they could have a system for kids to check in their cell phones while in class....

One pro that most likely people don't realize is the ability to use the Cell phone as a type of tool. Something to allow the teachers to interact with the students, maybe send updates or changes to home work assignments etc.

I would support a child being allowed to carry a cell phone with them to school, given the expectation that it was not to be used during class time, or during any school function. I think having use of a cell phone while waiting to be picked up after school, or for the walk to or from school would be enough of a benefit for the child's safety that it would outweigh any cons of the child bringing a cell phone to school with them.

I do not think that kids need cell phones at all. They are with adults all day and the if they need to use the phone they can go to the office and call. Until they are driving I don't think they need to have cell phones in school.
