Domestic ferrets are not wild ferrets so it has nothing to do with a natural tendency to dig. Our domestic ferrets are just that, domestic. They were bred in Europe thousands of years ago from Polecats most likely.
The domestic ferret is a carnivore. So even if it was a wild animal it would be eating mostly meat, not insects.
The bowl digging thing is just a little quirk some ferrets have. Nothing to worry about. But I would make sure that they are getting plenty of play and stimulation because it might be out of boredom. Not saying you are a bad fuzzy owner because she might do it no matter what.

Some ferrets do this out of boredom. One of mine used to do this. Another one used to do the same thing in one of the three litter pans I have in the cage. They are just trying to entertain themselves when they have to be in the cage and are not sleeping. There are bowls available that have either a built in cover(the whole thing is made out of ceramic) or a bowl with a bit of a lip on the inside which would make it hard for your fert to get the food over the edge. They also sell J-dispensers. They attach to the cage and hold quite a bit of food. You refill from the top and it comes out of the bottom. Don't worry, your little girl is just being a fert.
Have you ever put a big pan of water out for them to play with?? Some of my ferrets actually start "digging" in it.
To give them a way to get their daily digging done make a digging box. I use the bottom drawer of a stack of stackable plastic drawers and filled it with litter(you can use rice too). Once in a while I leave it open and they get to go exploring in the box. I sometimes hide a treat in there as well and let them smell and search. Since it is a playground they won't use it as a potty as long as there is no poopy smell in it.

Don't worry about it, my bunny does it too. Of course he does it to get the goodies out from the bottom of the bowl. lol, maybe it's some kind of instinct that your ferret has! oh yeah btw, where did you get your ferret, my boyfriend and i are looking for one

My ferret does this, too. She also tries to do the same with her water. And her litter box. When we take her outside to play or for a walk, she digs in the lawn. I think it is instinct.

Could just be a natural instinct. Also I don't know if this could be related even though they are different animals -- I heard that some cats do not like eating out of bowls because it is irritating when their wiskers touch the sides of the bowl... I think a veteranarian told me that.

One out of 4 of my ferrets does this...my guess is that he thinks the best piece of kibble is in the bottom of the dish. Either way, i still love them.

Wild ferrets often dig up grubs and worms and such to eat ... it is simply following its genetic tendency to dig.

Wild ferrets dig their food, it might be instinct or he could just want to play, pay attention to him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
