My friend Manny has a house high up a slope in Honolulu, Hawaii. I was a broke grad student, semi-homeless, but I spent $40 on a bottle of Moet et Chandon and went to his party with fabulous seafood and other food. As a small child, Manny had told his father that when the year turned to 2000, he would set off 10,000 firecrackers, so I also brought earplugs.

Honolulu is famous for the illegal aerial fireworks that so many people launch on New Years', more than on July 4. Movie theatres usually provide refuge from the smoke for people with ashma, but there's not much help for dogs and cats who hide in the closet from the noise.

There was supposed to be a laser-light show on Diamond Head, but nobody could see it for the smoke from the fireworks. Ah well, by the time midnight hit Hawaii, most people on the mainland had finally gone to bed anyway.

That night there was a temperature inversion which kept all the smoke within a couple hundred feet of sea level. We were higher up, and when Manny set off his 10,000 firecrackers, we watched the smoke pour downhill.

I was dogsitting, out in East Oahu in those days. When I got ready to drive down the slope a few hours later, most of the smoke had blown out to sea.

I partied like it was 1999 until I stopped and realized it wasn't anymore. Then I partied like it was 2000 for the next 365 days.

I was working at a Supermarket, going through an easy shift of work, after a HECTIC week of having people coming in to buy their last minute "supplies" for the ill-fated Y2K.

I was in my living room with my mom and niece wishing I hadn't opted to stay in for New Years out of fear of Y2K or the end of the world.

I hung out at my moms house with my baby (only had one she was about three months old) and brothers. I actually think I fell asleep before the New Year.
