Countries fight for many different reasons. Power-hungry or irrational leaders, resentment over real and perceived slights, disputes over resources and borders, etc. But the root cause is always economic.

War is supposed to be the political tool of last resort when all other diplomatic or peaceful avenues have failed. However, there are instances when a desperate leader will conclude that it is more advantageous for him/her to start a war with a neighbor than to pursue peaceful means, especially when he/she perceives the neighbor to be militarily weak.

If you look at the causes of wars throughout history, wars are always started for economic reasons. You could call it simple human greed. Desperate countries start wars. Just look at which countries are stirring up controversy in the global news these days. Conversely, as a country becomes more wealthy, it becomes more reluctant to start a war. This is an argument for raising living standards in poorer countries around the world.

There is also a school of thought in sociology that states humans are driven by a need to belong to a group. Given the uniqueness of each person, if each of us belongs to a group, then there will always be outsiders. This means we will always have an "us vs. them" mentality. If you believe this sociological trait, then you would also believe that it is impossible for humans to ever achieve world peace.

That would be nice, but its also unlikely. As long as there are crazy or evil dictators in the world, there will be conflict between countries. Its unfortunate. The one thing is that true Deocratic countries rarely go to war against one another. This is a part of the Pacific Democracies Theorem. Hopefully as democracy spreads through the world, war will disappear.

The $64,000 question! In the human world as in the animal world, are predators and grazers. The predators, generally dictatorial types (Hitler, Tojo) are always looking to expand their influence. The grazers (France) tend to ignore the warning signs. It then takes EXTREMELY costly wars to remove the predator and restore a balance. As you point out, peace would be ideal, but in human nature (as in lower nature), conflict is the norm. peace is an anomaly. The best way to preserve the peace is to prepare for war (Si vis pacem, parabellum--Julius Caesar). The problem is, if one prepares for war, there comes a time and temptation to use all those nifty toys...

I live in Israel the heart of war, the whole country is surrounded by Arab countries who are Israel's enemy and we are theirs (that was not a racial comment, although i live in IL i have nothing against Arabs)Alot of fighting comes from interest... One country wants what the other has and they fight to get what they want.
think of it like two kids, one with candy and one without, the one without would certainly want what the one with has (complicated)
the Israel~Arab conflict comes from conquering... They want Jerusalem and we wont give it to them. I also comes from beleifs, they believe that israel belongs to them (Acctually it did before we took over it some 58 years ago) but we didnt take it, we received it as a place for us and we need a palce for us "jews"
because of things like the hollacaust and so on....
Other reasons are like the reasons of the 2nd ww. Hitler was against evrything "different ", colored ppl, gypsys, jews and so on and he wanted germany to have the whole world. Other countries had to intefere and help because the s.s. army was so strong (kind of like how the americans help israel) and the more the other countries help the more enemys they get, everyone has an opinion and apparantly having different opinions is reason for war.... I too wish that we could all live happily with no war, i hate it.

Money, Oil and nationalistic Pride. Think of every war and one of those 3 are interwoven in the war. Nations use peace as a smoke screen for their political agendas. They try to make you think that they are fighting for Iraq, for Americas freedom. If I recall, we had a measure of freedom before the war broke out. That is why I don't support the government. I pay my taxes, I obey the laws, but i don't fight their wars and don't vote for them. If they wanted to abolish war and promote peace, then it would be their number 1 priority.

War, Gas prices, Gay marriage, Iran is in front of world peace. Tell me...what is their priorities?

Because humans are selfish being and they / we will always always want more. That is why we fight whether it is for more money, land, or anything else. We fight because being selfish is our human nature. My friend heard that someone died and said "Better them than me" I would have said something but that was actually the truth. We are just selfish.

We human beings are selfish. Our ego makes us do those things. We believe that we are better than the neighbors and deserve better things.
