Documents such as Word Documents and Excel files such as spread sheets and graphs and stuff can be password protected
Click "Save As". When the save as dialog box opens, click "Options". On the "Password to open" line enter the password you want.
Caution, be sure you don't forget your password or your work is lost forever, or until you remember your password.
You can remove this password any time you want, but you first need to know the password to get in. If you want to change the PW, use the "Password to modify" line.
Another option (you probably DON'T want this) is to make your file available for reading only and NO ONE can change your file. I do this all the time at work so I can control information while keeping it available.
One final point, the file or document can be deleted without using a password. If someone wants to be malicious they could remove things you block from them. So make a backup and keep it someplace no one would think to look. I hide stuff in my My E-Books file, nobody ever looks there. Really, does ANYONE have anything in that file?

You can't completely hide files on your computer, but if you have Windows XP you just click on hide files and folders, but of course you can always click that same button and unhide them extremely easily. Another thing you might do is, if your hard drive is formatted with the NTFS you can right click a folder, click security and sharing button, then click on the security tab. You can then deny other users permission to change, view, or execute a file. But you can't put passwords on folders or applications. And, by the way if you don't see the security tab go to Tools, folder options, then the view tab, then unclick use simple file sharing.

◙◙ LEARN COMPUTER BASICS ◙◙
◙ You should have read a great book called "Windows XP For Dummies" (no I'm not calling you a dummy) like I did when I first got on the Web. Except back then it was called "Windows 95 For Dummies". Trust me it's a great book and has lots of humor in it as well. There are two of them. Get the one that is 9 books in one. it has the most info. Don't read this book from cover-to-cover. Instead use it as a reference book.
◙ This book will teach you haow do do many many things with your computer. Some of them are copy, paste, delete, highlighting text, making a file, saving a file and the list goes on and on. Getting on the web before you learn the basics of your computer is like trying to be a race car driver before you learn how to drive.
◙ Look for this book at your local public library. If they don't have it have them use their username and password to login to firstsearch.org where they can get any book from any library in the world. :)

To hide the files you must select them and right click the file(s) and select properties, from there you can hide the file, after it is hidden open my computer and from Tools>Folder options > view select do not show hidden files and folders.
Use the program Folder Guard (http://www.download.com) to put password in folders.

if you're hiding files on a shared computer, give administrative rights to only yourself.
in search, you can find hidden files - there's a "search hidden files" box to check.
also, there is software to download and find passwords to access hidden files.
accessing hidden files can also be done via your computer's bios.

I think it has to be a compressed folder to have a password
or there might be some 3rd party software like at download.com that can do that
