55 is the average speed of the car.

Here's the calculation:

(100 x 60 + 100 x 50) / (100+100) = 55

In this case, you can just split the difference between 50 and 60 because the car went the same distance at both speeds. But it's best to use the formula above just to make sure.

the answer could b obtained by 2 methods
1-f u calculating avarage speed wrt time
2-or f u calculating avarage speed wrt displacements travelled

1- f u r dealing with displacements, then the car travelled 2 equal displacments each of 100 km
so the avag. speed is (50+60)/2 = 55 km/sec

2- but f u r dealing with time then the first 100km is travelled during 100/60 = 1.667 hrs
the 2nd 100km is travelled during 100/50 = 2 hrs
so the car travelled 200 km during 3.667 hrs (which is 1.667 + 2 hrs)
i.e the avag speed is = 200/3.667 = 55
(speed = displacement/time)
have a nice day

Assuming that the speed is in km/h

average speed=total distance/total time

the total time is 100/60 (to location) +2 (from location) hours

the total distance is 200km

From the formula, you get 200/(100/60+2)=54.5454545454... km/h

Note that you cannot do the average of 60 and 50, because you have spent different amounts of time on each speed.

This is one of those questions that seems to have an obvious answer, which in this case would be the wrong answer of 55.

The actual answer comes from just totaling the number of miles (100km + 100km = 200km). Then totaling the times to travel those miles (1.666...hrs for the first direction and 2hrs for the return direction) Then divide the total miles by the total time...
200km/3.666... hrs = 54.55 Km/Hr

You have to add the two speeds together and divide by the number of speeds you have:

(50+60)/2=x (your average speed)
110/2=x
55=x

So your average speed is 55 kph, and by the way, it took you 3.64 hours to go there and back.

average speed is Total distance/Total time
plugging in the values it is 200/(100/60+100/50)
now it is only a question of calculation

Average speed is
Total distance/total time

Here total distance is 200 km
time for first trip is distance/speed = 100/60 = 1.667 hours
time for return trip is distance/speed = 100/50 = 2 hours
Total time is 3.667 hours

So average speed is 200/3.667 = 54.54 km/hr

Also I think someone said average speed is zero- actually average velocity is zero because it depends on displacement(in this case displacement is zero)

Average speed is NOT 55 km/hr
