If you want Office XP, it would be best to have Windows XP as your Operating System as well as Office XP sucks up resources when you pull up the programs.

Considering your were running Win98 on your machine, can it even handle Windows XP if you tried to install it?

300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended, 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended, 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space.

These requirements may not sound like much to meet but the faster your processor, the better XP will run on your machine.

You can get a WIndows XP Home edition Genuine OS from eBay for about 80 bucks. Cheaper than the $300 you're gonna kick down at Best Buy. You need the FULL version, not the upgrade version.

Or, just go to Costco.com and buy a refurbished desktop for about $400.00, see my link below:

first of all if you are installing windows xp onto an older computer (circa 1999-2000) you are not going to have the proper system componets to run XP, for instance you might not the right processor. At this point you might as well as go out to the store and buy windows xp or go to sites such as bit torrent and download it illegally.

Or you can wait another 9 months and get a new computer with vista installed on it

All you have to do is buy a XP Home or Office editon at your local electronics store, put the disk it comes with in your computer and follow the installing instructions.

You will probably have to install windows first by just putting the cd in the drive and booting your computer up. If it does not give you the option to boot from a cd you will need to go into the BIOS and set the boot order so that it will try to boot from your cd drive first. To get into the BIOS you will just have to look for a message that tells you what button to push. After you get that far its fairly straight forward.
