Depends on what you want to do. 3D studio Max is the top of the tops for industrial design and architecture. Maya is the top of the top for creating animated video (remember ice age 1 and monsters inc, both were made using Maya). Don't forget to rate best answer !!!

I've been on the cheap for a long time too. Maya and 3ds max are too expensive.
I've been using Carrara 4 for a number of years and like it. I don't like it's modelling interface, but it does well on the animation side. For $249 you can't really beat it.

Watch Shrek 2 or The Final Fantasy movies and you'll get furstrated and forget about making anything...
Kidding.. don't get so buddy! using 3D Studio Max or Maya you can create something as cool as those movies sooner or later!
Wish you a good luck!

just do a search for "animation software free" . There are all sorts of simple free downloads and demos available. Some of the better commercial packages offer demos. There are many under $100 programs that are fairly capable. Just look around and tinker with them to see which ones appeal to you.

Try 3-d studio Max. I used that in high school. Pretty good stuff.
