so it is no big deal not to have ABS? I have had the brake pads changed. Anything else I can do?

the abs computer has seen a problem and turned off the abs section of your braking

It will act as a normal brake system, but if you are used to ABS braking as most have now, you will find usually on a slippery road how good that abs really is in stopping you

it's probably a sensor or if the light came on right after a brake job, you may want to bring it back and make sure they put ABS rotors on the vehicle (special rotors with little wheels the ABS reads for speed)

any independant can do it if they keep with with technology and have gotten training but main thing is buying the books to do the actual job... most don't and will send you to the dealer

Most likely your wheel speed sensor is bad. If your mechanically inclined you can change it. But i would suggest to go to a brake shop and ask them about it. Basically right now, your ABS is inopperative, so you will have reduced braking performance on wet pavement and ice.

Your ABS has detected a fault in the braking system so you won't have anti-lock braking. Typically this will result in your car just having normal braking without the anti-lock capabilities.

Most likely, your car is trying to tell you that it is time to get the brakes serviced. It could also be that the sensor is bad. It is probably better to err on the side of caution and have someone check out the brakes.

Time to hit ye dealership and have em take care of it for you...they don't always have all the answers, but their mechanics are usually factory-trained.
