I always run spyware checks and I know I don't have any extra junk loading. Would it work if I just unplugged the drive? It just adds to the sluggish startup of windows.

Some antivirus programs do a startup check. They check among other things if you have any file in your drive A. If you know your antivirus program well search in the startup check options and change them so they stop searching for drive A.

It is part of the start-up sequence that it first looks at the a:\ drive to check for any boot disk. If it doesn't find one then it goes on to check the c:\ drive and continues with startup. You can change the boot sequence to your computer to stop this happening. It usually involves restarting the computer and then pressing the F8 key a couple of seconds into the initial startup (when prompted) which will put you into a setup (BIOS) page.

Your BIOS setup would have been set to reboot the computer from A drive which is why it is booting from A drive. The way to resolve this is to enter into bios setup by press DEL button when you restart the computer and before its loads the Operating System This is take you to bios setup where you can change the booting and select a HD or CD instead of A drive and save changes and restart the pc you shouldnt be facing this problem again.

That won't really hinder the fact that windows is sluggish. Try removing stuff from your startup. go to start > run > msconfig if you have windows xp. if you have windows 2000 you'll have to use a program that helps with the registry edit off of currentRun/startup unless you're comfortable enough going through start > run > regedit

It could be it thinks theres a floppy in there. If it sees a floppy, it auto accesses it in case it's a boot disk.
