I am 15 weeks pregnant and my doctor wants me to get an AFP test, he said if its positive for DS...I could think about terminating the baby. Which I would never do anyway...but isn't 15+ weeks too far along anyway?

Apparently you could get an abortion up to 24 weeks. If there is an abnormality, you could get an abortion past 24 weeks with a referral from your doctor.

After 15 weeks the abortion requires 2 or 3 visits on consecutive days. You will see the doctor for a consultation and ultrasound before the day of the abortion. After the doctor examines you she will discuss the details of your procedure, tell you exactly what to expect, discuss the risks of the procedure at your gestational age, and answer any questions. The most common type of abortion done after 15 weeks is the D&E method. On the first day the doctor will insert laminaria after twilight sedation and local anesthesia are given. The laminaria are left in place overnight to dilate and soften the cervix. For late second trimester abortions two or more sets of laminaria are required. The abortion is completed on the last day under ultrasound guidance, which greatly reduces the risk of a serious complication.

15 weeks - The fetus (which means little one)
has an adult's taste buds and may be able to
savor the mother's meals.

Good luck with your choice.

I believe that you are able to have an abortion up to 24 weeks and in some other places 20 weeks... If you are from New York, downtown, I believe is 24 weeks... I understand that you are against abortion and that under the circumstances unfortunately you are faced with the sad reality of considering an abortion.. I know that this far long, it must really be difficult, but you should do what is best for you and that baby. Pray and hopefully things will be OK - - - I mean this far long, you should really not abort., he is an innocent baby and you never know things could work out so much better than you think...

Ok, I'm sorry, it took me a minute to clue in! (pregnancy moments!)
Down's Syndrome right?
Ok, well, i know a lot of families who have a down's syndrome baby! They are total blessings! And very nice children! It is harder work, but you will be blessed and love that child!
I'm not attcking you, I can understand why your doctor would give you that option! A lot of people would hate to be in your shoes, some people think it's ok if the baby has a birth defect! Now a serious birth defect i can understand. But I don't believe DS fits into that category! They may be a little slow, but the biggest blessings in the world!
I pray that you don't have an abortion, and if you find yourself in thinking about it and not wanting a DS baby, give it up for adoption, there are a lot of families who would take one in!
Good Luck and I hope you make the right choice for you!
And I always thought after the first trimester it was too late?! I'm not sure!
P.S. I'm against abortion too!

Morally, how far along is too late to get an abortion? Any time at all...abortions should never, in my humble opinion, be performed. Physically...Not quite sure. Some doctors do those partial birth abortions, and I think they have to be done before the second trimester is over...at about six months. The whole thought of that makes bile rise up in my throat, so I try not to think about it. Congratulations on your baby, and thank you for choosing to keep your baby even if the testing shows he/she has a genetic condition! I know that probably sounds ridiculous, but I can't think of a better way to word it!

Personally I believe that day one is to far along for an abortion but legally it depends on the state you are from. Alot of states do it til 24 weeks.
I wouldn't always depend on these tests. There have been many babies born healthy, although those "tests" said they have DS or another disorder. So I wouldn't rely alot on those tests.
Good Luck!

Usually in order to get an abortion, you must be 3 months or less along the way... anytime after that 3 month mark, they won't do the procedure because the baby has already began to fully develop with half limbs and so forth.

Description:
A surgical abortion that is performed between 6 and 12 weeks into a pregnancy may be done while the woman is awake. She may be given the option of being sedated by medication through an IV, or having her cervix numbed with an injection of anesthesia.

A surgical abortion for a pregnancy over 12 weeks is usually done while the woman is sedated, although it can also be performed while the woman is awake. The cervical canal is opened (dilated) and a hollow tube is inserted into the uterus.

For abortions later than 12 weeks, the woman may need to come for an appointment the day before her procedure to begin the process of opening the cervix. In this procedure, small sticks called laminaria are placed in the cervix to begin dilation.

A vacuum (suction) machine is used to remove the tissues (fetus and placenta) from the uterus. Medicines such as oxytocin are sometimes given to cause the uterine muscles to contract and reduce bleeding.

An abortion can be performed non-surgically for a pregnancy less than 7 weeks from the first day of the woman's last menstrual period using a combination of medications. The current regimen approved by the FDA includes administration of one dose of Mifepristone (RU486), an antiprogestin, followed two days later by one dose of Misoprostol, a prostaglandin analogue.

These medications may be given in the doctor's office, after a thorough history and physical is performed. Women who undergo medical abortions experience cramping and bleeding, and pass the pregnancy as though they were having a miscarriage.

The Food and Drug Administration's recent approval of the use of the abortion pill RU-486, will likely result in a dramatic increase of abortion in this country. The statistics are already staggering.
In all of America's wars, from the Revolutionary war to the war in Iraq, the amount of lives that were lost are less than one and a half million. However, over one and a half million babies are slaughtered in America every year! In eight years (1939-46) Nazi Germany killed 6 million Jews. But Americans kill 12 million babies every 8 years. The atomic bomb killed 115,000 Japanese in Hiroshima. Yet, abortion kills 125,000 babies every month in the U.S.

Add up all of the deaths each year from cancer, heart disease, and automobile accidents, and the figures do not total the number deaths claimed by abortion.

In this country we have programs for saving whales, owls, wolves, and eagles. Those who are caught shooting or trapping these animals will be locked up or fined. Yet, in our country it is legal to kill an innocent baby.

Every godly person is alarmed by the continual growth of wickedness in our nation; for, "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people" (Prov. 14:34). The slaughter of unborn babies is surly a reproach to our nation and an abomination before God.

The Scriptures make it plain that the fetus within the mother's womb is a living person-- a child, a baby. Rebeckah conceived twins and the Scripture declares "the children struggled within her" (Gen. 25:21-22). When Elizabeth, pregnant with John, was visited by Mary, "the baby leaped in her womb" (Lk. 1:41). The same term baby is used in the next chapter to speak of the baby Jesus lying in the manger (Lk. 2:12). God used the same terms to describe the born and the unborn. We also see that the Scriptures state that Elizabeth "conceived a son" (Lk. 1:36), then at the time for her to give birth, "brought forth a son" (v.37). Again, God uses the same term to describe the born and the unborn, declaring the unborn to be a living individual.

The fact that the baby in the womb has a living human body tells us that it also has a spirit; for "the body without the spirit is dead" (Jas. 2:26). If the unborn child's body is alive, the spirit must be present. The unborn child is a living individual with a spirit given by, and made in the image of, God.

Those who defend abortion say the fetus, or prenatal child, is not really a person, but only an appendage to the mother-- no different than a wart, bunion, or tumor. If this were true, there would be nothing morally wrong with abortion. However, the fetus within the mother's womb is a living child, a distinct person from the mother. Thus, to abort a child is no less than murder; for murder is "the intentional killing of one human being by another."

God warns against such sin. "Do not kill the innocent or the righteous, for I will not acquit the guilty" (Ex. 23:7). "The Lord hates...hands that shed innocent blood" (Prov. 6:16-17). "Thou shalt not kill" (Rom. 13:9). Murderers will be cast into "the lake that burns with fire and brimstone" (Rev. 21:8). Murder is sin, and abortion is murder.

Laws of this nation may give a mother the "freedom of choice" to terminate her pregnancy, but abortion terminates a pregnancy by the extermination of a life-- whether by the hands of a doctor or by means of a RU-486 pill.

Abortion may be legal by the standards of men in government, but the determination of what is right and wrong is up to God not men. "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29); for each of us will one day give an account for our deeds before God in judgment (2Cor. 5:10).

Too late is 24 weeks or your 2 trimester. After 24 weeks the fetus is considered a person. Trust me I know from being pregnant.

Although it is WRONG (in my opinion), abortions are performed on near full-term "fetuses". These are "partial birth" abortions, where the "fetus" is delivered feet-first, with only about half of the head still inside. Then, the skull is punctured, the brain and other fluids are sucked out, and the rest of the "fetus" is removed.
