Just depends on your perspective. Austrailians make globes with the south pole at the top. Americans have the north pole at the top. I personally think Easter Island is the top, and the rest of the planet is just "quircky" :)

Well, due to rotation, the earth is more like a sphere that is flattened at the poles and kind of bulges from the equator. Also, if you just look at it from the space, the northern hemisphere would always remain in the north and so would the southern hemisphere always be in south as the earth rotates on its axis from west to east and not from north to south. Hence, unarguably the top should be the North Pole.
Now the geographic poles (also known as True North and True South) and magnetic poles are different.
The Geographic North Pole, also known as True North, is approximately the northern point at which the Earth's axis of rotation meets the surface. The Magnetic North Pole is the northern point at which the geomagnetic field points vertically, i.e. the dip is 90°. The position of the Magnetic Poles keep on changing. Its location (in 2005) is 82°07' North, 114° 04' West, near Ellesmere Island, the biggest of the Queen Elizabeth Islands, in Canada. During the 20th century it has moved 1100 km, and since 1970 its rate of motion has accelerated from 9 km/year to 41 km/year.

If you are standing in the north pole, the top of the world is the North Pole and if yor are standing in the south pole, the top of the world is the South Pole. If you are in the non-polar region, the place, where you are standing is the top of the earth. You believe it or not, the bottom of the earth is the centre of the earth! 'Top' and 'Bottom' are the man-made concepts!

I hate how most maps show the north pole at the top because people begin referring to north as up and south as down. I lived in Oregon where the Willamette River flows from south to north. That clearly makes north downhill yet most people there still refer to north as up. Technically, away from earth's gravity is up so the center of the earth is down. I think the top of Mount Everest is usually referred to as the top of the world though.

It is all a matter of perspective. If you live in the northern hemisphere, like most inhabitants of the world do, then the North Pole is the top of the world. Given an extradimensional view of the universe, such as Einstein had, neither would be the top because the universe curves in on itself, which is a non-euclidian geometry. What might be the top at one point in space-time wouldn't be the top at another point in space-time.

The north always pointed up and since the NP is actually in the North, the NP is th etop of the world. But actually, both sides of the Earth are the same. The ppl in the southern Hemisphere think that the SP is the top and the ppl in the Northern hemispher think that NP is the top.

Well, the Earth is "pear-shaped" with the big part in the southern hemisphere and the pointed end in the northern hemisphere.
According to Jonathan Swift, even discussing which is "top" makes you rather Lilliputian.
