It shows the level of the class. In general, any class below 100 is considered a pre-college course. 1XX courses are first year college courses. 2XX are second year, and so on. Some colleges have it as 101, some have it as 100, and some even have it as 110.

They numbered the classes in each department. Now many of them are actually 4 numbers like English 1024 or something. But 101 has come to mean the first course in something.

In college, the lower numbers mean it is an easier class. If it is less than 100, it does not count to your degree. So 101 is the lowest number possible to count toward your degree, or the easiest class in the subject.

101 is an introduction course. You will usually find such courses as "Introduction to Psychology" in this ranking. If I recall correctly they're also without pre-requisites, since they're not supposed to assume much pre-existing knowledge.
