I think 18 is a good age. Really its impossible to say because everyone is different. I have saw some 30 year olds that was not mature enough to make a decision like that. Some 16 year olds are very mature and can make rational decisions. Because it is impossible to set the law on a case by case basis, in America they determined that 18 was the proper legal age.

Well the legal age for sex is written in the laws of the state. Mine is 16. And probably the reason, I don't think 14 year olds are capable of knowing the consequences of their actions as they have little life experience, have limited ,if any, access to birth control, physiologically or mentally capable to function as anything but what they are: Children! It isn't really helpful for a body that is still growing to have most of what it needs to be shunted elsewhere.
And it isn't legally to have sex! It is legally to consent to have sex!
It has little to do with "welfare" and more to do with hormones or thinking they willbe loved by someone because their parents often don't. Welfare is a crock anyway. You can't even find an apartment for what they would get!

18 is good for several reasons. At 18, you can vote and help determine the laws of the counry. This is the age most people graduate highschool and the age you can join the military. I am shocked that in Canada an adult can legally have sex with a 14 year old.--not old enough to drive but old enough to make responsible life altering decisions?

There is no nation-wide age of consent in the United States, since each state sets its own laws about such things. They range from 13 to 18 and some states have no age of consent law as long as the two people are within a certain range of years.

US society is more Hippocratic than the Canadian. Sex among youth between 14 to 18 is rampant in the US. How many of them are booked if it is illegal? Sexual behaviour is connected to natural stimuli and response which is regulated by the social environment and not by law. Unmarried mothers and unmarried fathers number very high in the USA, Canada as well as UK which is a reflection on these societies and their social value system. Nature has designed sex for procreation and not sensual pleasure. This important aspect is missed sight of by these so called great western civilisations.

Is it really only 14? That seems so young to socially endorse sexual behavior. But, there are states in the US that allow that age to get married. I know that when I was 16 I had no business having sex (althoug I did). I didn't know enough or fully understand what the possible consequences were.

In the US it varies by state. Most states are 16-17, but there are lots of exceptions.

Generally it is about the age you become an adult. Legally, you are an adult at age 18. This means you can enter into contracts, smoke, vote, and spread your wings and live on your own.
