Looking for something other than dis-assembleing the entire dash and steering column. (and no, you cannot reach up behind the dash--not enough room to get your hand in there)

My repair manual shows dropping the steering column, removing the radio, and the lower part of the dashto get the instrument cluster out.

You have to remove the instrument cluster, which does not require you to do anything to the steering column.
