I clean my computer quite often-from the outside, but I have never opened the tower-I'm scared to death of being shocked!!. Are there some things I can do to find out the cause for this? This has been going on for several months now. When I completely shut the computer down, let it sit for several hours, it will run for 4-5 minutes normally, then a louder noise, and the non-stop fan will begin and not stop. I have a Dell Dimension 3000, Intel Pentium (R) 4 CPU, 3.00 GH2, and 512 MB of RAM. I am aable to follow directions easily, but am not extremely proficient with my computer.

the fans should run all the time, if they are getting loud, then unplug the power, open the case and get a can of air and blow the dust out from around the fans

Actually your computer has several fans that run non-stop. Basically this is done to keep the Processor cool and to move the heated air out of the computer case. Without the fans constantly running, you'd fry your motherboard, or worse....you'd fry your Processor.

If it's getting too noisy for you, there's a few easy things you can do to reduce or get rid of the noise all together.

1. Get a quieter fan. They tend to be a little more expensive but they do run quiet.

2. Keep your PC dust free. Keep your PC away from dirty areas and if you must clean dust from the fans and the inside of your PC, remember to unplug it first and use canned air to rid yourself of the dust. Dirt is the #1 killer for PCs.

3. Invest in an air conditioning system for your PC. Fans will not run as hard if your PC is constantly cool.

Always remember that Pentium 4 processors run hotter than any other Processor class too. So keeping them cool is extrememly important.

Comuters have gotten so advanced, and theyre advancing more and more. To make the chip smaller with more storage, they get really hot with small wires having a lot of power going through them. Without the fan, ur comp would overheat.

Maybe you are over heating your computer... Try ringing dell or a computer shop and ask them just incase.
