It is beyond me, but most of the time my wife assumes that people don't like her and she reads into people's comments way too much. She usually perceives comments as negative, using them as 'evidence' that the person making the comment does not like her. It's driving me crazy! What should I do?

She thinks one of our neighbors can't stand her when I know for a fact that the neighbor holds her in high regard! For some reason she just cannot see the positive side and realize that this neighbor has done NOTHING that would indicate spite or hate!

She has low self steem issues. The root can be in childhood experiences or emotional trauma that make her be in constant state of defensiveness.
When that persons suspects that they don't fit in and that people are talking about them, can upset a normal social life. She will ebcome more withdrwn and will avoid social settings, or become anxious in any social event etc.

For what I read, she exhibits Paranoia, a symptom of several psicological disorders, such as depression, esquizofrenia, eating disorders, etc.

To better help your wife, don't judge her! If she feels this way is beacuse something is wrong and she needs help. Try to go to couseling or a therapist.. Be aware that people with paranoia are resistant to treatment and she may reject the idea of going to a counselor because she will be suspictious about therapy too.

Be loving and caring...remember that you are ther for BETTER OR WORSE, IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH, she needs help now, not judgement.

Good luck to you

Each of us has a personal truth. Apparently, one of your wifes beliefs about herself is that she is not worthy of being loved, & you can confront her with all of the proof in the world that she is loved by everyone, & if she chooses to, she will transform everything she can find in that proof to back up her own personal truth that she is not loved at all. One thing is for sure, you will frustrate yourself into madness until you accept that she will not be able to change & accept herself positively until she is ready to make a change in herself. There are many self-help books available in book stores & on the internet. Present these to her & stand back, because you won't get anywhere forcing this on her. If she is trying to change but can't do it on her own then it may come to accepting outside help or councelling. If she absolutely refuses to look at changing, or getting serious help, then there will come a time when you must look at whether you can continue to live with things the way they are, or you will have to move on.
Good luck

She sounds like she has some serious self esteem issues, maybe she needs some kind of professional help to realize that she is a good person and that nobody hates her.
