The most random thing you could do would be to the store wearing nothing but a boot on your head, buy a Hustler, pay for it in pennies, and read it upside down in a handicapped space in the parking lot.
The best way to get out of a rut is to use the George Costanza method... Do exactly the opposite of whatever it is you normally do. Instead of tuna salad on white toast, get chicken salad on untoasted rye. Instead of being intimidated by women, walk right up to them. Well.... You get my point. :-D

In general, no. Life (at least my life) is far from predictable. If I were to watch a video of my life thus far, the path I've taken would be so random even I would be confused. From packing my bags and moving thousands of miles away to experiencing life through 28 days of 'soul searching'. From living in my car for what seems like forever to picking apples for a living while getting paid nickels and dimes. You never know what was going to happen next.....even I didn't know.
That being said, lately, my life has been very predictable. Why? An 11 month old girl needs routine. She needs predictability. She needs to know 'what will happen next'. It took a lot of getting used to for me. I was always so spontaneous and very 'last minute' about things.....not any more. Everything I do revolves around my daughter's schedule. It's like clockwork. I feel like I am working in a factory again. Oh, don't get me wrong....I love the time I have with her and I know the predictability is for her own good. It just gets very 'ground hog dayish'. <~~~ya know, the movie.
But I know there will come a day when she is grown and I wish I could kiss her belly again without her opposing or bite her toes without her thinking I am weird. So, for now I am predictable but who knows what the future holds.

A coupla years ago I was in a terrible rut...but I was quite proud of it nonetheless because it took me years of fine tuning to get my rut just where I wanted it! I had a love/hate thing going with the rut. It afforded me safety and security and since it was my rut because I created it, I thought I could do anything I wanted within it. Wrong.
The rut was so deep that I could no longer see any other life outside of it...and I was trapped in it...and one day when I could no longer see in front of me...I realized that my life was predictable, boring, and would always remain that way unless I crawled out of the rut I made.
So I sold everything I worked my whole life for, my business, my house, and moved my entire family 5000 miles away. I crawled out of my rut by forcing myself out of it. I took away all of my safety nets that I relied on, all of my security...and made a leap into the air...outside of the rut. And now I'm happier for it.

One has to deliberately tread the unfamiliar pathways to overcome the monotony of the same old road. Repetitions makes life boring because after a while our subconscious takes over our patterned responses and hence we lose out on all the novelties and new ness of a situation. Imagine taking the same road to you workplace. After a while you will drive without even looking at a new hoarding which has come up or the new building which has come up, but if you travel on a new lane you notice every little landmark. One has to deliberately break the patterns because it feels much comfortable to keep moving in familiar territory than the uncertainty of the uncharted waters.

Bombard atom nucleis with electron isotopes. The results are pretty random. It always gets me out of a rut. I wonder what bull elk do when they are in a rut?

Sit down and think about yourself......Write a list of everything you do and on the other side of the page, write down the opposie of all those things. Wake up one day and only do the opposites.
