You have an underlying problem, and if you dig deeper into yourself you will find the problem. Broken things are just the surface. Re-evaluate what you have been doing and figure out from there why or what it is that really bothers you. If it is something that you can change or take care of then do it. If it is something that someone else has done, then you have no control over the situation and toss it in the garbage and get on with your life. Lessons are for learning. If your learn't the lesson then you will not go through the same situation again. Good Luck. Enjoy life.

Good answers so far... transference or "hysteria" (oh, what a laugh!) are what Freud might have said.
(Personally, I'm more into agreement with Object Relations and Karen Horney, rather than Freud. And Jung was more visionary.)
If I had to render my own opinion, a person who breaks down over a cabinet unit handle is internally stressed about other things, and the handle was just a focal point for that bottled-up stress to be released.
The person should dig deeper, to see if they can figure out what's really bugging them. That can fall into psychoanalysis (Freud's domain) or other types of counseling and/or introspection.

he'd say that you were transferring the "brokenness" of your own life to the broken handle...or something like that.
he would probably prescribe cocaine, as he did many of his patients, and was an avid user himself. (learned that in intorductory psych.)

He'd probably say that you see the broken object as an extension of yourself. Bearing in mind he was obsessed with genitilia ........!

"Get a grip"....no pun intended. But really, he'd probably say something about stress or hysteria.
