For most animals, it would sound weird to specify its gender. I would just say female snake, male snake, female turtle, etc. Many animals have special words to specify the gender; for example, a female lion is called a lioness. A male cat can be referred to as a tomcat. A male elephant can be called a bull elephant. A female elephant is a cow. However, it sounds normal to say "she-wolf."
