A)- memorizing stuff and understanding them go hand in hand. i think you should try to undertstand about the things first then write them in your own way.. dont learn by heart, try to use your own words and you would find it easy if you understand the idea of the matter.
B)- in your draft and while studyin', please try to state the things you wanna talk about in your answer. for example, if you are talkin about some character in a novel, you should think like this>>
1- the significance of the character in the novel
2- his relationship with other charachters.
3- what he does in the novel.
the above elements or "titles" (1,2,3) are the things that you should learn by heart. Once you memorize them, you would find your pen writin on its own ;) and it would be so easy for you to write in your own words the whole stuff relating to the character and guess what? you wouldnt even forget any important thing.
hope i was helpful enough..goodluck, dear

if u want to memorize something, you have to do it a day before, cos, believe me, you'll forget everything. Ask me ! lol!
i guess it's better to understand a subject. it will not be difficult to forget. that's what i do but when there is a subjeact that i dislike, there will be nothing else than to try memorize it the day before.
So good luck and study well ;)

It depends on the subject. For example history is really only memorization. But for math you need to learn at least the procedure or algorithm.
