Are you from India or abroad? How a person can keep the environment clean, if he/she is not clean from heart or mind. It's the mentality that breeds everywhere. Clean heart and mind and nourishing good values throughout will help keep the country clean. It should start from internal level. The upbringing is the main root cause. Indians comprise of all of us. Cleanliness should arise from total 100% population of the country. Clean habits and pure mind will lead to Clean India.

People generally have little respect for the environment in which they live - ignorance and indifference are two reasons for the state of an unclean environment. Countries adopt different methods to ensure that their citizens behave responsibly towards environmental cleanliness; but it requires the strictest of enforcement at all levels - those who can do that will have a clean country like Singapore. My admiration is for the Japanese and the Swiss whom i feel has the most socially responsible citizens anywhere - the don't even need monetary fines to punish offenders.

You are absolutely right. We should improve the image of our country. Clean street does not have to do anything with poverty. Have you seen countries like Palestinine territories, Khzakhsthan, or even poor African countries like Kenya. The have much cleaner city streets(i'm not talking about slums). Anyway, even rich/middle class areas are quite dirty in India. People seem to be quite selfish over here, they clean their own homes all the time and then dump all the garbage in Public property.
