yes, everything happens for a reason, and no, it doesn't contradict free will. you don't know when things will happen to you, but God does. also, only you make your own choices.

The idea that everything is planned out does not directly contradict the idea of free will. Knowing what's going to happen is not the same as controlling it.

Yes and no. Maybe.

There is cause and effect. It does not negate free will. Free will is the ability to make a decision that usually turns out to be pretty stupid. The results are because things happen for a reason. For example, let's assume you decided to strap a JATO unit to the top of you car. Yeah, I know, who the hell would do that. Well the results would be you get smashed into a million pieces. It happened for a reason. You were being really stupid. Or you lower yourself into a lion pit, and proclaim God will protect you, just before a lioness tears your throat out. Or you dress up as a nurse, and steal a baby. The results are pretty predictable, they happen for a reason. Free will is what got you there. Laws of nature is how you ended up.

Oh yeah, the JATO story...

The Arizona Highway Patrol were mystified when they came upon a pile of smoldering wreckage embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The metal debris resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it turned out to be the vaporized remains of an automobile. The make of the vehicle was unidentifiable at the scene.
The folks in the lab finally figured out what it was, and pieced together the events that led up to its demise.

It seems that a former Air Force sergeant had somehow got hold of a JATO (Jet Assisted Take-Off) unit. JATO units are solid fuel rockets used to give heavy military transport airplanes an extra push for take-off from short airfields.

Dried desert lakebeds are the location of choice for breaking the world ground vehicle speed record. The sergeant took the JATO unit into the Arizona desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, accelerated to a high speed, and fired off the rocket.

The facts, as best as could be determined, are as follows:

The operator was driving a 1967 Chevy Impala. He ignited the JATO unit approximately 3.9 miles from the crash site. This was established by the location of a prominently scorched and melted strip of asphalt. The vehicle quickly reached a speed of between 250 and 300 mph and continued at that speed, under full power, for an additional 20-25 seconds. The soon-to-be pilot experienced G-forces usually reserved for dog-fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners.

The Chevy remained on the straight highway for approximately 2.6 miles (15-20 seconds) before the driver applied the brakes, completely melting them, blowing the tires, and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface. The vehicle then became airborne for an additional 1.3 miles, impacted the cliff face at a height of 125 feet, and left a blackened crater 3 feet deep in the rock.

Most of the driver's remains were not recovered; however, small fragments of bone, teeth, and hair were extracted from the crater, and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel.

Ironically a still-legible bumper sticker was found, reading
"How do you like my driving? Dial 1-800-EAT-SH!T."

All things work together for good...

I've been in some of the worst situations and asked God "why?" and then a few days, months, or even years later, some good has come out of it!

You can choose to do anything that you want, Here is a perfect example:

do you have a boyfriend or husband, girlfriend or wife? Don't you look back and think..."Gosh I'm glad I gave him/her the time of day?" Have you ever been in a really crappy relationship? And now you have learned from that relationship what NOT to do so that you can better perfect the one you're in now, when you're with someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with.

I don't know. I like to think I have control over my future, but some things happen that you can't control. I wonder if things like cancer happen for a reason. I got leukemia, then was cured for 2 years, and last week it came back. Now what would be the reason for that? I don't know. But maybe there is one. This is an interesting question :)

Yes. The Lord has given us the freedom to choose. And it depends on us on what we will choose. But I know everything happens for us a reason.

The 20th Century art movement Dadaism claimed every event is simply a roll of the dice. There is no logic in everyday occurences, the universe simply rolls the dice and the event happens.

I believe most often free will IS the reason for the things that happen, but also that miracles happen, in which case that would be God exercising His/Her own free will.

I believe everything truly does happen for a reason. Sure there's free will but you choose whatever route or outcome that you want and with that choice being made it happen for a reason. I would like to think that in my life every tear, laughter, argument, has made me who i am today. It made me a stronger better person. We always have choices and sometimes they aren't the best ones but we learn from them.

* I have not failed...I've just found 10,000 wayd that don't work! *

What's free will got to do with being run over by a bus?
Free will & fate are no where near related.
