I'm not being flippant ~ I'm being very serious and giving you an honest opinion: be very, very, VERY sure you're actually good as well as unique before embarking upon this mission.
American Idol tryouts, if you've ever watched them, is a shining example of how many are NOT good, have no idea they're not good, yet have family, friends *and* voice instructors who support and have convinced them that they are good.
Most voice instructors/trainers are going to tell you you are good because you are, in essence, paying their bills when you continue paying for lessons!
Get some completely unbiased opinions of your actual abilities, then proceed. The suggestion of American Idol wasn't a bad one because, rest assured, they'll tell you if you have what it takes or not!
Good luck! =)

Hey I say go for it. I have always dreamed of becoming a singer, actress and a model. I didn't go for my dreams. If you feel you have the talent there is a lot that you can do now. You have American Idol and all these other reality shows. You started off in the right place, the church. Pray and the Lord will lead the way.

Well if you're in NY, definitely try out for American Idol as soon as you can. At least it's a stepping stone to get you exposed.
Next you want to make a demo tape and go through the phone book and look at where the different record labels are located and either mail them or drop off a copy of your demo. You have to be persistent.
Try writing local radio stations that play your genre of music and as them if they have an amatuer shows where you can get your music out there.
Finally, go to open mic nights at clubs and other venues to also get yourself exposed.
Good luck! NYC is a great town to make it in.

Well.... your in the perfect place. Ummm.... I would try networking... You'd be surprised how many arists I've meet in the city and have had private convos with them....and I am not interested in music career. Dont go to clubs and give demos cause artist are leary of demos cause someone might say they stole there work 5 years down the line and have them in court. Best thing to do Is network. GOOD LUCK
