In modern times, it's always been London. It was even an important city when the Romans were here.

The Anglo-Saxons divided England into smaller kingdoms, each with its own capital. None of these were "the capital of England", but under Offa and his successors (from 757AD onwards), the kingdom of Mercia dominated. It's capital was Tamworth in the Midlands. Probably it's only claim to fame. Ever

Winchester was the capital of Wessex. This was the only kingdom to survive the 9th century Viking invasion intact (but Wessex still didn't control all of England at this point). The Danish invaders also used London as their capital after 872.

Wessex finally defeated the pesky Scandinavians in 954 and united England, with Winchester as the capital. But soon after the Norman invasion in 1066, the capital was moved back to London

In Roman times York was perhaps the most significant city, after Romans left, the regions of what is now England were seperate nations. Wessex became the most significant of these and so Winchester its capital was Englands capital when these regions united. Canute of Denmark became English king in1016 and so made London his capital as an inland port with acces to the north sea and thense to Denmark and Norway, which he also ruled. From then its been London

Hasn't London been the capital, since capitals existed? It was named after the Roman "Londinium". And before the Romans builit lots of things in London everyone was sort of in little villages in the hills.
