Stand by me. Originally a Steven King novella. I absolutely love this film, it's beautiful, funny and really sad. The film captures the tone of the book perfectly and actually improves on many of the features of the books. Its one of those kids films where they cast quality actors in it as well. River Phoenix was particularly good. Awesome

I'm not sure if you meant best film based on a book or best book made into a movie. (it could be either and they are slightly different)

Anyway, one of my favorite books of all time is 'The Trial' by Franz Kafka. When I found out that there was a movie version, I wanted to see it but I had my reservations. Kyle Mclauchlin did a great job (I also love his work in Twin Peaks) and the whole movie did 'jsutice' to the book. It was great!

Visually, I would have to go with Lord of the Rings.

I'd say "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Of course I read the book a long time after I first saw the movie, but I couldn't imagine anyone playing Atticus Finch but Gregory Peck. There were some scenes left out of the movie that are in the book, but on the whole I think it's a faithful adaptation - and a great movie in its own right.

From what I've seen so far it is definitely the A&E/BBC version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. Although it is around 5 hours long it definitely does the book justice and doesnt skip anything. Also, the actors all play their characters perfectly and make me feel like I'm actually reading the book instead of watching a film version of it.

I think thaT "The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe" was pretty loyal to the book... as well as the Notebook. But if I had to decide for one... I think it would be the last movie of lord of the rings (The Return of the K.), I just loved the way they made the end, not showing a hole bunch of details that you can find in the book, but still I think it's the one that sticks the most...

Harry Potter... mmh... I don't think that the movies were that of a good adaptation of the book, but I still liked them.

Fight Club.

To Kill A Mockingbird was an awful adaptation of the book. It focused on about 3 chapters from the middle and completely left out the beginning and end of the story.

Lord of the Rings.Actually the movie is better than the book. The book was way too long.

Chocolat by Joanne Harris.Again the movie starring Johnny Depp was better.I certainly liked the way they changed things in the movie
