they should at least try u cant really teach common sense but they should teach us stuff that will actually help us in life. Im in high school and we get taught the dumbest things that im positive will never help me in life. Like who will ever need to know how to make a box and whisker plot? or how to find supplementary angles?

I teach Geography in a snr-high school and often because of the nature of the subject and the demands of the questions, 'common sense' is much more appreciated then regurgitated textbook answers.

I have whined, bitched, moaned, yelled, coerced, whack, go totally crazy trying to get my kids to EXERCISE THAT LAST OUNCE OF COMMON SENSE in them when they attempt the exams, but no, apparently when they joined the school, they didn't come with batteries and common sense.

So yeah, you can't teach it at all. They will all automatically get it once they leave school.

You do teach common sense, but teachers need to find opportunities to teach it during incidental events. For example, I am walking in the hall with my students, a guest is coming in the front door and looks lost, I go over and introduce myself as a teacher and help them along.

I explain to my students about manners, being helpful and common sense dictates that I should help the person out. I think regular incidental experiences needs to be explained to our students. It should not be taught as a subject, which will be dry and not realistic.

Speak yo your kids and explain to them your actions and why it is done.

That would be a great idea. But how do you teach common sense. From my experience, you either have it or you don't.

Common sense can't be taught in school They lack it themselves. Besides, common sense comes from experience.

A kid without common sense won't learn it from their teachers. I think parents kind of have to instill it in them before they are school aged.

We already do! We just call it "critical thinking skills."

And let me tell you, most of my students are highly lacking in that category.
