It depends on the bird you are trying to attract. Martins and Blue Birds, for example do not require or prefer a perch. Do some research on a house for the bird you want to attract.

It is best NOT to have a perch on the outside of the bird box. Larger birds may use this as a means of access to the eggs and chicks inside the box.

Not really. The birds will land on the roof if they need to. I have many bird houses up and they just fly right in.

It offers the bird a place to perch before entering, and certainly they can't be expected to enter at top speed from flight.

Consider your own entry to the house. unless its level with the ground, would you expect to enter every time, or exit, without steps? or a landing?

No, in fact many bird homes are simply old western style boots with a small hole cut out near the heal area, my sis has one and the birds love it.

No. Actually it is frowned upon because it makes the nest inside the birdhouse easier for prey to clean out the nest.

No, they do not. We have several wrens now that are nesting in houses with no perches.
