the technology to make color movies was very expensive up until the late 40's/early 50s. For movies it was easy to make the switch, because the theaters didnt need new equipment to show color. But for TV everyone had to buy a new set, so TV shows didnt start broadcasting all in color until the 60's.

BTW - the Wizard of Oz was done in both B&W and Color, not colorized later. But only the scenes in Oz were in color.

The Wizard of Oz helped popularize full 3-strip technicolor in film. Disney's cartoon Flowers and Trees was the first, but it took a really long time for the expensive and difficult (tons of lighting required in the beginning, for example) process to gain commercial acceptance. The Wizard of Oz was so successful that color films went into much higher demand after that. As the process became cheaper and easier, and as TV sets began to be manufactured in color, then color TV shows came around, but the TV technology was behind compared to color movies.

Because before that time color film had either not been invented, and by the time it had (1930's) the cost was so prohibitive that studios could not afford to film their movies with it.. When the Wizard of Oz came out it was the first big movie to be filmed in color. It was not until the 1950's that studios could finally afford to make movies in color on a regular basis, and the 1960's when it could be made affordable to the general public. Even during the 1950's and 60's many films were still shot in B&W, but those were films with smaller budgets, usually "B" movies, horror movies, etc.
Hope this helps! :)

It was very costly to make movies in color back then. What the wizard of oz did was really remarkable back then.

Color was saved for the realy classy films of that time ("Gone With the Wind", "Becky Sharp").

Keep in mind that the "Cisco Kid" TV show was shot in color.
