Hiya. Fellow UK resident. I fell in love with the most amazing woman who lived in the States, with a five hour time difference between us.
We made it work by using the available technology to our best advantage - IM with a headset (headphones and mic as one unit). This was then like being on the phone, only much cheaper. It let me be there when she came home from work, to share some evening with her, and she made me wake her before I went to work, to share some time in the middle of the night and soothe her back to sleep with words that helped her feel my arms around her.
We worked like this for a while, and interspersed our time with the occasional visit - she came to London first, then I went over to the States to meet her friends and family.
This is not an easy life, and I'd be doing you a disservice to tell you it is. But if it's going ot work, you'll feel it. I did. One of my friends asked me, during this time, how long I'd be prepared to wait for my girl. The answer that came out of me was simple and honest - 'till the end of time and beyond'. When it's right, it's just right, and all the rest of it - the geography, the personal circumstances, everything - is just filler in the way of your life and love.
Ultimately, things got insecure with her job over there, and she was made redundant. It was kind of like a final sign from the world to say "go." So she went. Came to me here in London (We'd already decided that that's what she wanted, rather than to have me come to her). We got married, and have now been together more than a year and a half. It wasn't an easy beginning, but we always envisaged the end we were working towards, and it's soooo worth it.
Good luck to you both. :o)

Def. use technology to its fullest! Use your vacation to go visit or vice verse. Talking on the phone/IM/webcam can only give you so much.
You only live once. Wouldn't you rather like to know that you tried than never knowing?
That's what I did and I don't regret it!
