In the private sector, Barclays has 113,000, BP has 103,000 - those are British companies but their employees are not all in Britain, but they are the two biggest British companies I believe.

In the latest reported accounts filed with Companies House (where all UK companies must be registered) it appears that the Compass Group PLC is the largest employer with 410,074 people, ahead of Securicor, Tesco and Unilever (BT are a lowly 17th!!). Compass group are involved in the provision of foodservice and vending foodservice customers whilst at school, in hospital, when travelling, at work or in leisure. The group had a turnover in 2005 of £12.7bn and profit before interest and tax of £300m
As for the Public sector I am unsure, but I assume maybe the NHS or Civil Service.
