i don't believe that a free antivirus can be best. it can be good, but not best. like grisoft's free software. it is good, but it also got a lot of times when it doesn't detect a virus going rampant in my computer.
best way to have free that is best is to consider to join beta testers of antivirus softwares. either they'd give you the software for free or you'll have a good deal for it at the end of the testing.

In my opinion, the best resident protection from a free product is AVAST! - it provides realtime protection for standard activity on a PC, web browsing, instant message, and peer to peer file transfers, along with other layers of protection. I consider the best on demand free antivirus scanner to be Bitdefender 8 - it does not provide realtime protection, but offers a very fast and highly rated on demand scan, complementing AVAST's realtime protection.

The most important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates + http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Note: The way I have mine set is to only notify me that updates are availiable, but to not download them automaticaly. Then I can check to be sure I get just the ones I want. I then click on "custom", and after the updates have been downloaded I look them over to see which ones I want, then disconnect from the net, disable firewall and anti-virus program, and then install the updates, and then re-enable the firewall and anti-virus programs before reconnecting to the net.
