I have the impression that most Americans (US citizens) consider themselves free, and America is almost by definition "The land of the free". But compared to Europe I think Americans have a lot of restrictions in their lives, most of them due to a puritanical religious set of values and maybe also due to the fact that the US has become such a dangerous place to live in, at least the cities. Here in Denmark everyones free to get married, including homosexuals. Peoples sex life is their own business, not the churchs. Doctors and hospitals are free. The public schools are safe. My son can ride his bike to school even though we live in a large city.
I'm not saying that we're better than you, just want to discuss what "freedom" really means.

You are quite right. Denmark is indeed one of the best examples for true freedom, democracy and a positive community. Long may it last!

Many Americans do indeed believe that they are the most free and liberal nation on the planet, but they believe a lot of other strange and incorrect things as well. And since only 18% of the US population ever travel abroad, the majority has never any chance to compare their own situation with that elsewhere. It is rather sad.
You are also right to assume that the roots for this goes back to the rigid Puritan values on which the USA were founded. Strict protestant bigotry, freemasonry, greed and violence are the four traditional pillars of American society. In recent times Puritan influence, which was predominantly pacifist and isolationist, has been replaced by militant fundamentalist Bible-bashers who are in contrast aggressive by nature and very active warmongers.
They have hijacked the White House and meanwhile taken over most of the USA, and in the process reduced the freedom of the ordinary people even further. If things continue as they are now, the USA will be one huge concentration camp, controlled by a small group of dangerous fanatics.

I am so glad to live in Europe, where there are proper laws, a democratic system and plenty of freedom.

Alot of Americans do feel restricted by church beliefs but that isnt because the USA put those restrictions there, thats their own personal choice. As for freedom wise in general I have never been to Denmark. Things are kind of spread out in the USA, so riding bikes to school and things like that dont really happen because EVERYONE has a car lol. There are large cities in the USA that are just going to crap and there are alot of safety issues but that happens everywhere. I dont know that I would say it has "become one of the most dangerous places" lol. I think people get a false sense of crime here sometimes. Of course little things happen all the time and big things happen some of the time. But alot of big cities that have gone bad do have more shootings and stuff like that. I blame alot of that on parents not raising their kids right. Sometimes its easy to lose hope when our country builds upper class cities around the ghetto.

Are they?
Freedom, we could think is the length of the rope tied around our neck!
Your comments are correct, except that The USA is the land of opportunity, not necessarily the free. That is why many have left the country after what the organized government is doing in the name of all citizens!

From what I see, Americans have the most freedom to practise Christianity. In Europe, laws are being passed which restrict Christian beliefs, and actually discriminate against them.

Thank God for America!

American is suppose to be 'THE LAND OF THE FREE', but with the Government, Laws etc:

We are only free to do what is allowed, and that is always being changed to suit...

Land of the Free is made up of things that control us to be civilized!

In some states it's against the law to spit! Get that...

What the latest American surveys reveal, about America, is that Americans are more mentally ill than other nations (over 25% are diagnosed as mentally ill, says the Harvard study published in the medical journal); Also fatter and more ignorant than other nations, by comparison. In addition, Americans tend to believe the lies of religious and political propaganda more than others do. One religious lie they tend to believe is you too can have partiality from an impartial God (there is no respect of persons with God). Hence their primary evangelical religion tends to be rather evangelastic when it comes to telling the truth.

As for freedom, they are not free to travel to neighboring Cuba, nor to smoke a Cuban cigar in Canada when travelling there. As for their ignorance, I found many in the southern United States did not even know where Canada was, when it's larger than United States and it's largest trading partner; providing the most oil, gas, and bottled water they consume while running to and fro with their claims of being free, in a country where more of the people murder each other with guns than any other nation; Not to mention what they do with their tongues as WMDs.

America has military troops in over 60 nations, spreading their brand of freedom (law) at gunpoint.

Their law law president says they are a nation under "law", but the Holy Bible says "ye are not under law, but under grace".

The Bible says ye shall know the truth, and knowing the truth shall make you "free". Considering Americans have no problem with lying or faulty lawing, they are as unfree as it gets. Ask their scientists how free they are, who can only get research grants if they let government change their findings, prior to publication, to suit current law law political and religious mandates.

2Peter 2:19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

The "grace" of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

The "puritanical religious set of values" is based on the fact the U.S. is a Christian nation, founded by our forefathers who based their lives on the Bible. We are the most blessed nation on earth because of our Christian heritage. What you call freedom, Christians would call sin. We feel sin leads to bondage, not freedom. Sin is as dangerous as crime, if not more. What you call "retrictions" are really moral boundaries (which have eternal benefits). Yes, I believe Americans are free but immorality is taking its toll and God may have to soon step in.

"Free" is relative to the individual.

Many American feel they are free, so they are.

I, however, prefer the more European way of thinking, for examples, gays and lesbians being allowed to married.

Yet, I do love my country, and I do feel in many ways I am free.

To me, freedom is the ability to enhance and improve myself in anyway I see fit. The idea that there is no limit encourages me, and I enjoy living within this country - though I might not agree with all its ideals.

No, no longer unusual. Mexico is a rest room, that is common there. That habit will improve right here because of the fact the hispanic inhabitants booms. maximum have a third international physique of recommendations and don't understand the thank you to obey the guidelines of progressed countries. Thats why latinos would desire to stay south of the border.

Good points. How can it be the land of the free when no non-religious person dares to run for public office, knowing they will be the target of the worst kind of abuse (unless they're willing to pay lip service to beliefs which they don't share)?
