Yes trigger is necessary .First thing to do is to join various pieces to form critical mass then a reaction must be initiated by trigger say by bombarding with neutrons.
Though I don't know how many triggres are needed

A modern nuclear fusion weapon needs an older Hiroshima/Nagasaki type fission bomb to act as trigger. The atomic or fission reaction part is triggered by a more run of the mill chemical explosion. So, it is an initial regular bomb explosion starting the process of fission atomic reaction which generates or triggers the pressure required for the fusion reaction. How much of a reaction? Well, the energy (or E) released from even a small amount of matter (or m) is quite large as explained in the famous equation E=M*c^2 where c is the speed of light squared--a very big number.

To start a nuclear blast you will need to exert lots of pressure on a Uranium or Plutonium sphere. To do that you will need to envelop this sphere in another one made of convetional explosive. The idea is that you must have uniform presure on the center sphere so you must detonate the outer one simultaneusly in a number of ingnition point on its surface. Maybe those points are the triggers you refer to.

But just as a short advice: Don't try this at home!!!!!!

It really is a very complex chain reaction of the atoms.

The construction & technolgy used is of immense importance

The basics is chain reaction & try to release immense infinite

energy .
