The answer is bound up with Jesus' foreknowledge of his own destiny, which was to die on the Cross to atone for the sins of mankind.

The devils were presumably attempting to convince people that he was the Son of God, so that when the choice came for crucifiction, the people would choose Barabbas instead of Jesus.

This would negate the reason for God creating a son and sending him to live an earthly existence. If Jesus was not crucified, there was no point in him being on Earth.

The same argument is currently being used to promote Judas Iscariot as being essential to the unfolding of the events surrounding the crucifiction, i.e. that he helped Jesus to fulfill his destiny by betraying him.

Jesus knew when he was supposed to reveal he was the Son of God. Even his own Mother questioned when he should do that. God has a great big plan. And no, I haven't seen the new movie out.
