Just so you know, my husband had an affair, this is the reason for the divorce, and there is no money involved, he has not got a penny and neither do I so I am not divorcing him for money, we both took our own possessions and nothing belonging to the other person.

The first thing that happens is that the divorce papers are served on your ex ,this is usually by post and takes no more than a week , after that depends on weather he answers, defends or agress to the grounds for divorce. If everything runs smoothly and amicably then typically six months is the kid of time frame to get a decree absolute. One of the earlier answers had some really good advice re lawyers, they really do just view you as a source of income ,the basic divorce is no more than a couple of hundred pounds but the second there's argument the cost run up incredibly fast. suggest you work out what you want and try to reach an amicable settlement, mediation is sometimes a good way to go. As a basic guideline for a marrige thats lasted more than 4 years 50/50 asset split is normal but recent cases (marfarlane and parlour) suggest that future income canbe a factor as well. What ever any solicitor tells you the outcome of amny court hearing isn't certain the only certainty is the legal fees. Wish you best of luck with the outcome

There are three ways to get divorced, quick normal and slow, depends on the relation ship
quick: one divorces the other and the other is told and agrees, this should take 8 months approx.
Normal: both agree to divorce, 10-12 moths approx.
Slow: One ask for divorce through court but the other disagrees, 2 year seperation period then up to 2 1/2 years to get the money and stufff sorted out
P.S. DO NOT do slow as my parents are and there is far too much turmoil between them

my divorce took longer to finalise than my marriage lasted. I had never consulted lawyers for any reason before and I was as naive as they come.
My ex and myself were actually being as amicable as we could given that he had hurt me enormously, but once lawyers became involved it suddenly turned very very bitter, they prevented us from talking as far as they were able, and I realised over a period of time, that they were dragging it on and on because there was a lot of mieage (money) in it for them. Things that did not need to have been a problem suddenly turned into the most huge obstacles ever and resulted in numerous court hearings etc etc. I wasn't aware I had a legal right to change lawyers and so whenever I voiced my irritation at how things were, the lawyers representing me would try to suggest that I could go my own way if I wanted to, but that it would be very tricky without legal help. When I did eventually seek advice elsewhere, they refused to hand the file over because they said the divorce was almost finalised. It went on for another four years. Naturally by then I had found a different firm to handle things, but not before a lot of damage was done resulting in the repossession of the matrimonial home, and my subsequent depression.
So my advice is, a divorce can be as long as a piece of string depending on the lawyers you have, and you being assertive enough to remember that they are working for you, not the other way around.
Good luck

My ex and I went for a diy divorce - total £430 between the two of use and it took a total of about 6 weeks from the first papers to the decree absolute.
If everything is amicable DO NOT use a solicitor. They muck things up for everyone.

my parents' divorce has taken 5 years so far and is still going on. it is amicable and is a straight forward divorce, there is no need for it to take this long! neither of my parents are loaded, so it's not like the solicitors are even making lots of money!

There usually pretty quick but depends on your grounds for divorce and whether there are children involved , most family court judges don't like to stamp that nisi until custody and child access issues are agreed ,once the nisi is through its 6 weeks
