A bad beat is when you have a strong winning hand beaten by an even stronger winning hand. For example you may have a full house that is beaten by another player making Quads on the river. This would be quite a severe bad beat as your oppenent only had one 'out' that could beat you.

A lot of amateur players mistake general poker quirks for bad beats. For example a player who wins a pot by drawing to and making either a Flush or Straight (roughly 4:1 odds) can easily tell if he is playing with someone who doesn't know the game if they call a 'Bad Beat'.

To summarize (from Wikipeda): "when a particularly strong hand loses to an even stronger one. In some casinos there is a "bad beat jackpot" awarded whenever a player suffers a particular beat."

A bad beat means that you had a good hand that you would win with in most cases, but your opponent won with 4 of a kind or better.

A bad beat is like a bad luck story. Like you have a great hand and get beat luckily by the opposition.

In the short term it is gambling. In the long run it's not, depending on how you're playing it. Much like, when you play a game against the casino like Roulette, the casino is not gambling against you; you're gambling against the casino. In poker, the losing players are gambling against the consistently winning players. The winning players have an edge, like the casino has an edge in table games and slots.
