Wash the towels again but in hot water (to kill bacteria) with color bleach if dark colored towels or regular bleach for light color towels. That smell happens to my laundry if I leave it in the washer overnight. I have to place clothes into dryer within a couple of hours. If all fails, it's time to buy new towels... the material has mold growing in it.

I would run 2 cups of bleach, or half cup of baking soda in an empty washer. This is to clean your machine and the pipes. I really love Tide with a touch of Downy in clean breeze. Use this with hot water to wash your towels. Make sure you put your towels in the dryer immediately after washing. If you wanted to, put a dryer sheet for extra freshness.

Usually they smell like that when they sit in the washer for some time after completion. Have you tried to add fabric softener? I found the Downy Ball helps a lot!
I don't think the smell is related to water quality.
Good luck!

Use Borax. Works great for removing odor. Used for my baby's cloth diapers. Smelled fresh after every wash.

princeofdaarkness is right- they will definitely develope a musty smell if you leave them in the washer too long before drying them- our town has reverse osmosis and the whole nine yards, but I can't leave any of my family's laundry in even overnight before they start to smell odd. :)

Maybe a cupful of vinegar. Vinegar works wonders on lots of stuff. Do I sound like a commercial?
