Im just about to sit for one of my postgrad exams today. Having just gone through a full time undergrad programme while working full time, as a foreigner (in London) who has no financial or social support structure of any sort, Im very impressed with the progress. On the bus to my exam centre, my mentor/tutor/friend, a very educated (in my eyes) and proud black man, sent me a text message simply saying "GO ON AND SHINE" - I broke down and cried... Is this normal???

crying is the most basic of emotions in every human being and there really is nothing abnormal about you breaking down..

Years of pent up frsutrations and struggle just resurfaced...
so really it is perfectly normal

You're under a lot of pressure and the fact that the person that you regard as a mentor still has hope that you will do great made you emotional. He must be a very good friend because his opinion matters so much to you and he seems like a wonderful person. Hang on to him such people are very rare and they come by once in a lifetime. Someone who gives you hope when there seems to be none, someone who deeply cares that he gives you a go shine message is a very good person. Wow, you're lucky.

Yes, I think it is. Don't worry about it. It's called stress. It's taking its toll and I guess it just happened that the message triggered it. Crying actually makes people feel a lot better. Don't worry, people have cried for odd or no reasons at all. Congratulations by the way.

it's an emotional release to get affirmation from someone that you are doing well or being encouraged, so tears are a normal reaction.

depends on what you mean by normal.
Most likely the reason you cried was because of your state of mind at the time.
